Beef Biriyani

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday for the Christians.  As per the Bible, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

So thought to begin lent by ending with this beef biriyani. :)

1.beef -2.2 lbs/1 Kg chilly,cut length wise-12
3.onion,big – 3( 2 1/2 + 1/2 for garnishing)
4.shallots,sliced – 10
5.garlic,crushed – 6 cloves
6.ginger, crushed – 2 inch
7.turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
8.salt -to taste
9.ghee – 5 tablespoon +1 teaspoon
10.tomato -1
11.lemon -1
12.garam masala powder – 2 tablespoon
13.yogurt/curd – 1/2 cup
14.cashew nut – 1/4 cup
15.raisins – 1/4 cup
16.cinnamon – 3 inch
17.cloves – 6
18.cardamom – 6
19.rice – 4 cups
20.water -7 cups


Step 1 Heat a pan with 4 tablespoon of ghee and saute the ingredients mentioned from number 2-8 till the onion becomes translucent.

Step 2 To this add tomato chopped, lemon juice, and garam masala powder and saute for another 3-4 minutes.


Step 3 To this add the beef pieces and curd and cook the beef.


Step 4 Meanwhile, in 1 tablespoon of ghee fry 1/2 cup onion (till golden brown), cashewnuts, and raisins separately. Keep this aside.

Step 5 Cook the rice along with cinnamon,cloves,cardamom by adding enough salt and 1 teaspoon ghee.


Step 6 Next make layers by alternating with beef.Garnish with fried onion,cashews, and raisins. Serve hot along with raita.
