Mathanga Erissery is one of the dishes in the Onam Sadhya.It is one of mine and my husbands favorites in the Vegetarian section.And trust me..this recipe
will make you too like this simple but delicious dish..
Mathanga/pumpkin, diced & skin peeled – 2 cups*
Vanpayar/red gram – 3/4 cup*
Coconut,grated – 1/4 cup
Small onion / shallots, chopped – 3-4 nos.
Chilly powder -1/2 tsp.
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt – to taste
Oil – 1 tablespoon
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – a few
Dry Red chilly-3 nos.
Green chilly-3 nos.
Garlic – 2 cloves
Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp.
Heat oil in a pan.Once,the oil is hot, splutter the mustard and cumin seeds.
Then,add coconut scrapped,sliced small onions,dry red chilly and curry leaves.
Once the small onions have turned brownish,add the chilly powder and stir till you get a good aroma. Next,pour over the ground mixture.Stir till the coconut looses its raw smell.Finally,add the cooked pumpkin and red gram.
Serve hot with rice.
*cook pumpkin in water(with just enough),with little salt and 1/4 tsp.turmeric powder.
*cook the red gram in almost the same level of water.
See to it that both are cooked separately or the pumpkin will get the color of the red gram.
